An exciting experience that takes visitors right into the heart of a mountain that reveals the wonders of the most powerful power plant in Trentino.
The plant forms part of a structured system which, through a vast network of tunnels, penstocks and hydraulic works, takes water from the peaks of the Adamello to Lake Garda.
The plant building was designed by architect Giovanni Muzio, the brains behind the Università Cattolica and Palazzo della Triennale buildings in Milan, as well as the Basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth.
The spectacular turbine room of the Santa Massenza plant, with a volume of over 150,000 m3, is dug completely out of rock at a depth of 600 metres.
20 minutes from Trento and Lake Garda is the Valle dei Laghi, a valley where water dominates the landscape with the lakes of Terlago, Santa Massenza, Toblino and Cavedine. The area offers a captivating countryside where alpine and Mediterranean vegetation meet. One famous landmark is the “leccio of Sarche”, an age-old Holm oak tree in the town of the same name, standing 25 metres tall and with a trunk of 5.5 metres in diameter.
Near the Santa Massenza power plant is Lake Toblino and its enchanting castle, which has long been a popular haunt among artists and poets who drew inspiration from the magic that is all around. Along the road between Dro and Drena is the Marocche biotope, an accumulation of over 180 million cubic metres of rocky material created in the post glacial period. A landscape unique to the entire area of the Alps, dominated by Castel Drena, a medieval fortress open to visitors all year round.
